Our skin is of vital importance to our health. Our skin is responsible for providing protection from environment, providing us with an emotional sense of boundary, creating sensual awareness to communication with the “outside” world e.g. feeling pleasure or pain signals that are vital to our survival and well being.. How our skin feels physically often determines the way we feel emotionally.

Our skin is one way that we communicate information about ourselves to others. We blush, turn pale, signal “worry” or “stress”with wrinkles in our forehead or around our eyes and mouth. Our skin often is used by others to form an impression of our age, how much we are indoors or outdoors and our activity, through scars, wrinkles, colors, and texture of our skin. Our skin is a signal to ourselves and others about our overall health internally, externally, physically and emotionally. “How do I look?” i.e. “What are others seeing and, perhaps, thinking about me?”, is a question about the appearance of our skin. This information comes from the tone, texture, firmness, and aroma of our skin.

Our skin is one of the largest “organs” of our body composing about 10% of our body weight. Our skin entirely replaces it’s surface about every 60 to 90 days. Our skin eliminates waste, toxins, sends signals to our internal bodies, and actually breathes. Disturbances in our skin, e.g. eruptions, dryness, oil, rash, “age spots” wrinkles, blotches, etc are often an indication of our internal health..

Many of us have used synthetic prescription drugs, lotions, or creams, to care for our skin. Often these synthetic substances are accompanied by undesired and sometimes harmful “side effects”. Our bodies are designed by nature to absorb and use substances that are natural. When an “unnatural”, i.e. synthetic substance, is introduced into or on our body, it “interprets” that synthetic, unnatural substance as “foreign”or as an “invader”.Our body protects itself either through the production of antibodies from our immune system or does not absorb these synthetic substances.

In contrast, our body readily recognizes, absorbs and uses natural substances as the appropriate material to use to build, repair and sustain itself. Our skin operates in the same way as the rest of our body in terms of what it will or will not absorb and use. Natural substances are recognized by our skin, internally and externally, as “welcome” ingredients for use in building, repairing, and sustaining itself.

There are many natural anti-aging skin care products we can use topically on the outer surface of our skin. All natural anti-aging skin care products contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and aromas from nature that our skin readily recognizes as appropriate for use. All natural lotions and ointments, help our skin to maintain it’s healthy tone, texture, elasticity, aroma and to repair injury, discard waste, breathe properly, sense appropriately, release used skin cells, build new skin cells, protect us, and improve our appearance.. These all natural products contain amino acids, vitamins, antioxidants, herbs, enzymes, aromatherapy oils, and other natural substances that support our skin health.

Remember that the most important factor in the health of our skin is our internal physical health. An important aspect of anti-aging skin care is healthy digestion and elimination. Our intestinal system is responsible for absorbing food, nutrients, and water and for eliminating waste and toxins from our bodies. When our intestinal digestive system is overwhelmed, it places an extra burden on our skin to increase it’s waste disposal function. When our skin’s waste disposal function becomes overwhelmed, we develop skin disorders. This is particularly true when we are tying to digest processed foods, dairy products, or other foods lacking fiber. Food becomes putrefied and toxic because it cannot be processed or eliminated properly. Our skin then attempts to remove these toxins. Pores may become clogged, inflamed, discolored, dry, or oily. If we want healthy anti-aging skin, we need to keep our intestinal digestive system functioning properly. We can help our digestive system with all natural enzymes, essential fatty acids, probiotics and fiber.

Digestive enzymes reduce large food particles so that the body can absorb nutrients and the entire body, skin included, benefits. Discolored skin, wrinkles, or blemishes, can be signs of enzyme deficiency and the loss of collagen that accompanies it. Digestive enzymes reduce free radical damage, help us remove toxins and maintain a healthy balance of beneficial intestinal microflora. Probiotics provide and maintain a healthy balance of intestinal flora, vital to our intestinal digestive health and, in turn, the health of our skin. Beneficial flora promotes the health bacteria we need and destroys harmful bacteria that can lead to illness and infection. Unfortunately, synthetic prescription antibiotics destroy the good bacteria along with the harmful bacteria. Probiotics help restore the healthy microflora and bacteria after synthetic antibiotic use. Probiotics also help the skin to have healthy bacteria it needs and eliminate the growth of harmful bacteria.

All natural vitamins such as Vitamins A, C, and E are essential for anti-aging skin care. Vitamin A is needed for skin cell growth and renewal. Vitamin A is an antioxidant that fights free radicals, provides nourishment for the fat layer under the skin. Vitamin A deficiency results in dry, rough skin, eruptions, wrinkles, poor texture and tone. Vitamin C helps repair skin by building collagen and fighting infection. Vitamin C deficiency is connected to aging and ultra violet ray damage. Vitamin E also protects our skin from UV damage, reduces free radicals on our skin surface, and helps prevent the peroxidation of fats which results in skin cell damage.

All natural herbs improve complexion, help remove heat, toxins and swelling from our skin. Herbs can help lighten skin and maintain natural skin moisture..Herbs help prevent scar formation and facilitate new healthy skin growth.

Amino Acids fight harmful bacteria and viruses. Amino acids help carry vital oxygen throughout the body helping our skin breathe. Amino acids are part of facilitating enzyme efficiency and hormonal balance which is a major aspect of anti-aging skin care. Amino acids help stimulate collagen production. Collagen is the tissue that determines skin firmness. By increasing the production of collagen, amino acids can help our skin retain it’s firmness, therefore reducing lines and wrinkles.

Essential fatty acids, EFAs, help our skin to become softer, smoother, and retain proper moisture content. Essential fatty acids have a very beneficial effect an the synthesis of prostaglandin hormones in our skin cells. Omega 3, an essential fatty acid, greatly benefits skin texture and may also help prevent the development of skin cancer and aging of our skin.

Our bodies produce Hyaluronic acid which is found to be abundant in young skin. The affects of aging and environment gradually reduces the amount of hyaluronic acid our bodies produce and maintain. Hyaluronic acid is important for our body’s connective tissue, especially in our skin. Hyaluronic acid also helps to cushion, lubricate and provide needed flexibility for our skin.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is becoming well known for it’s anti-aging effects and is a potent antioxidant that combats skin damage and helps repair past skin damage. Alpha lipoic acid provides great free radical defense especially when combined with other anti-aging antioxidants.Alpha lipoic acid is soluble in both oil and water. Alpha lipoic acid enhances the benefits of vitamins C and E and Coenzyme Q 10.

Coenzyme Q 10 helps decrease cellular oxidation in skin that accompanies aging. CoQ10 enters the layers of the epidermis and reduces the level of oxidation.. CoQ10 helps protect against UV light. CoQ10 activates phosphotyrosine kinases which prevents oxidation damage. CoQ10 is a very important natural nutrient for anti-aging skin care.

Our natural skin requires natural anti-aging skin care. Many all natural anti-aging skin care nutrients are available for us. They include amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins, anti-aging antioxidants and anti-aging skin care formulas. We can help our skin externally through the use of topical all natural lotions, ointments, creams and solutions. We can keep our skin healthy internally through the use of all natural supplements, vitamins and formulas. Our skin keeps our internal system in place and protects our internal structure. Our skin provides valuable information about our overall health. Our skin is important not only for our appearance, but more vitally, for our complete well being.

Hey EveryoneSorry for the lack of post lately, but I’ve been putting out some fire within my real estate company. Few people would think of walking as cure for many of the ailments we all accept as part of our modern lifestyle but it is now recognised as one of the best exercises you can do at any age.

* Walking helps regulate the heart.

* Walking, it is believed, can boost the immune system causing the body to produce killer cells which will destroy any germ cells they do not recognise. However to achieve this you must walk every day.

* Walking increases blood flow and raises oxygen levels in the body. This in turn stimulates the immune system and helps repair tissue damage.

* Walking burns off calories.

* Walking minimises your risk of bowel cancer (according to a report by the US Surgeon General).

* Walking makes you feel better and helps reduce stress that is part of our modern daily life.

* Walking has long been prescribed by doctors and chiropractors for people with low back pain.

These are just some of the benefits of regular walking and apart from the cost of a good pair of shoes - it’s free!

If you suffer from low back problems you should consider including walking as part of your regular daily exercise routine. If your neighbourhood is one where you don’t feel comfortable walking then think about joining a gym and get on the treadmill with your IPOD or MP3 player.

A recent study by UCLA researchers found that a group of low back pain patients who did 3 hours brisk walking per week had considerably less pain and distress than a group who were given specific low back exercises.

Before you grab your walking shoes and rush outside there are a few points to consider if you want to reap the maximum benefit from your walking.

The first is stretching. Always do a few gentle stretches before and after your walk - find out from your healthcare practitioner what stretches are the most suitable for yourself.

The muscles should always be warm before stretching, and the stretch should always be gentle. Current research indicates that the stretch should be held for at least 30 seconds to be fully effective. Always ensure that your breathing is relaxed and rhythmic - holding your breath will make any stretch ineffective. It is also important to stretch on both sides to maintain symmetry. As a general rule do warm up stretching exercises starting at the top of your body and work downward.

Here are some examples of suitable stretches for walking. Please note that these are for illustrative purposes only. You should consult a dedicated book or worksheet before doing these stretches.

HEAD ROLLS - rotate your head around so you end up with your ear near your shoulder then go the other way. Repeat this several times, and then do some arm circles.

HIP STRETCH - hold on to a chair and bend your right knee, keep your spine straight and upright. Lean forward slightly and keep the left leg straight. Hold for 30 seconds. Switch sides.

LEG STRETCH - stand erect and hold onto a wall or a chair for support. Now bend one knee behind you so that you can grasp your foot. Hold your foot against your bottom and gently push your knee gently back as far as you can.

Hold for 30 seconds, and then repeat with the opposite leg.

CALF STRETCH - keep your spine straight and push lightly against a wall with open palms. Place one leg forward with knee bent - this leg will have no weight put on it. Keep other leg back and straight with and heel down. Gently move your hips toward the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold 30 seconds. Repeat with other leg.

HAMSTRING STRETCH - place your foot on a bench or chair with your toe pointing upwards. You should be standing far enough away such that your leg is straight. Bend forward slightly from the waist keeping one hand on the raised leg so that you feel your hamstring stretch. Hold for 30 seconds then repeat with the other leg.

Secondly is posture. There is no point in walking if your posture is all wrong. Before you set out try this simple check. Stand with your back against a closed door. Try to align your shoulders against the door. Now try touching the door with the back of your head, your buttocks and your heels at the same time. If you can manage this then your body is in the correct alignment.

Try taking your first few steps with your head held high, looking straight ahead. Keep those tummy muscles pulled in. Try to avoid leaning forward when you walk. Don’t worry if you find walking like this a bit strange at first concentrate initially on holding your head high looking straight ahead after a few days you will find your are starting to walk more upright

Thirdly and equally important is footwear. If you suffer from lower back problems consider investing in a good pair of walking shoes or boots. You should wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes that provide good arch support. The best shoe for one person may not necessarily be the most suitable for another. It may even pay dividends to visit a podiatrist to see if it would be to your advantage to have heel inserts.

If you are new to walking start off gently, do not overdo it for the first few sessions. Gradually build up to walking at least 30 minutes each day - this is believed to be sufficient to decrease your risk of heart disease. If you can build it up to an hour per day it is believed you will decrease your risk of breast cancer and type two diabetes.

The information in this article should not be used to diagnose, treat, or prevent any disease. You should always consult with your health care professional as to the suitabilty of walking or any exercises described in this article and especially for health matters that may require diagnosis or medical attention.

Calcium is a mineral essential to all stages of life, age groups, and gender.

99% of the body’s calcium is stored in the bones and teeth. The remainder circulates in the blood for use by the muscles and nervous system. It is important to note that the body does not make its own calcium; it is obtained and absorbed from the foods in your diet. This will include supplements if you are taking them.

Calcium concentration must be kept constant, and if not enough is taken in to the body, calcium will be withdrawn from the store sites in your bones. The bones will gradually become less dense, losing some of their strength, which can then lead to osteoporosis (brittle, porous bones). Withdrawing calcium from the bones is the body’s way of keeping blood levels constant.

Men and women will naturally lose calcium from their bones as they age, but the rate of loss is much higher in women. Women who are experiencing menopause, will have a faster loss of calcium from their bones. A good store of calcium in the bones at the menopause stage of life, will assist a woman in keeping osteoporosis at bay.

A calcium rich diet for the first 30 to 40 years of your life is essential for building-up your calcium stores. This will put you in a good position for fighting off bone disease in later life.

Calcium is essential to the body for many functions including; maintaining healthy bones and teeth; muscle contraction, including heart beat regulation; maintaining a healthy nervous system; regulating blood pressure (aiding blood clotting); the fight against osteoporosis. Studies have shown that diets rich in calcium can help the body to manage fat cells by aiding the mechanisms that store fat in the body. The result can help with weight loss. Including foods rich in calcium can help create a feeling of fullness, which can help to prevent snacking in-between meals.

Factors that influence calcium absorption

Vitamin D: Obtained from the sun on our skin, and is prevalent in food items such as canned salmon, eggs, butter and margarine. Calcium can not function in the body without Vitamin D. This vitamin helps to regulate the absorption of calcium from the food we ingest.

Exercise: Weight bearing exercise is needed for optimal absorption of calcium into the bones. This can include, walking, aerobics, running, dancing, cycling, gardening, weights or even pushing a pram.

Protein: A high protein intake reduces calcium absorption. Recent studies indicate that while dairy products are a good source of calcium, their high protein content can interfere with the body’s ability to use the calcium ingested. It is best to obtain calcium from a varied diet, which includes non-dairy sources such as soybeans, almonds and salmon.

Hormones: Menopause sees a decline in oestrogen levels, resulting in a decline in the body’s ability to absorb calcium from your diet. The adolescence (teens) stage of life sees less calcium being absorbed due to the changes in hormone levels for both males and females.

Weight: Extreme thinness, (low body fat levels) or following very restricted diets will affect calcium absorption, and see withdrawal from the bones as the body struggles to maintain a constant level of calcium in the blood. This can lead to osteoporosis in later life, as the skeleton has not been given a chance to become strong.

And: High levels of Caffeine, Salt, Alcohol or Smoking will all reduce the amount of calcium the body can absorb from the diet.

Signs of Deficiency

A mild calcium deficiency can lead to insomnia, brittle nails, muscle twitching, irritability, and palpitations. Severe deficiency affects the muscular system - cramps, pains, numbness, stiffness, and depression. A deficiency of this degree can cause rickets in children. The most at risk are the elderly, those who avoid dairy products or other sources of calcium rich foods, those on high protein/high fibre diets, or when consuming large amounts of alcohol.

Hey EveryoneTo be honest I am feeling a little guilty. I ended up purchasing a recliner for my practice Southern Hypnosis, but spent more then I told everyone I would.I ended up going to J.D. Kinders and really didn’t see anything I liked until I walked into the back room. As I walked into the

When people hear the word “diet”, we tend to think of counting calories, eating salad, and being pretty miserable. In fact, the word “diet” is more about eating healthy, nutritious foods on a daily basis. There’s no need to starve oursleves just because we’re struggling to lose weight!

So what does a nutritious diet consist of? In my opinion, it’s all about consuming foods that keep your energy levels running at a constant high level throughout the day, and allows them naturally fall at night. It’s really about eating correctly in such a way your body is continually fuelled to the most appropriate levels. This doesn’t mean eating salads all day - it simply means thinking about what you eat, and when you eat it.

My recommendations are as follows:

- Eat complex carbohydrates earlier in the day to keep your energy levels up
- Try to get at least 30 minutes of some form of exercise every day
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily
- Try to balance each meal with 50% Carbohydrates, 30% Protein and 20% Fat for ideal nutrition
- Try not to go for more than 3 hours without eating something
- Don’t eat anything withing 2 hours of going to bed
- Try to eat protein rich foods within 4-6 hours of going to bed

It’s important that you keep these points in mind as you go through your daily life as this wil maximise the value of your diet. If you’re able to keep up with this over a period of time, you should find that you have more energy and your sugar cravings lessen. This has definitely been my own experience! Additionaly, the weight will naturally start to drop off without you needing to eat like a rabbit!

If you follow these ideas, then I truly hope you find them as helpful as I have. All things considered, losing weight doesn’t have to be punishing! Conversely, eating a healthy diet doesn’t have to be about losing weight.

Eat well, eatheathily, eathappily, and dont’ make this any tougher than it needs to be.

Happy Dieting!

Hi Todd. Depends how you are smiling, where and when. But generally speaking people will find you more approachable if you smile slighly more than most people. According to the ’smiling research’ carried out By Unmist University in Manchester England: 72% of people believe people who smile alot are more confident, 86% of people say they are more likely to strike up conversation with strangers who are smiling and bosses are 12% more likely to promote people who smile alot :) All the bestMark

Anyone thinking of going on a sensible weight loss program in order to shed a few pounds and learn how to live a healthier lifestyle should certainly give Weight watchers a glance. Weight watchers are an established name in the field of dieting and are one of the few who have had great success throughout the world and had remained successful ever since its beginning in the early 1960`s.

Since its beginning millions of people the world over have joined Weight watchers clubs and have managed to succeed in their weight loss and stuck with it. This is perhaps due to the fact that at a weight watchers club meeting, while being encouraged to eat a sensible well balanced diet you are also given a plan to follow that is interesting enough to make sure that boredom doesn’t set in. This is the main downfall about of any weight loss plan, there are many restrictions and boredom quickly brings about the downfall of the diet.

The weight watchers diet allows you to eat the things you enjoy while showing you how to do this the sensible way and encouraging you to take more exercise. Weight watchers are well known for their club meetings and the encouragement they bring to the individual, the clubs are an excellent way to get this encouragement and this has always been one of Weight watchers strongest factors, the support it gives.

The weight watchers club is more than just a diet which the individual has to struggle through alone, it becomes more like a family and this is the mainstay of the system. While during the initial meeting when you sign up for weight watchers you will be weighed alone and go through an interview about your lifestyle and your weight loss plans for the future, after this the whole system is done in a group. Meetings take place once a week and there are discussions, talks, here you can let your thoughts and feelings out and share them with people all in the same boat. This leads to the feeling of never going through this alone and this is what makes Weight watchers unlike any other system and is probably the main reason why the system is so popular and has stuck around where so many other diets have failed.

Weight watchers is available in almost every town and city, they very often have introductions and special deals which waiver the fee to join, this is usually after Christmas which is when the majority of people decide to go a weight loss plan.

Emotional Healing Hypnotherapy from Hypnosis Tip

How can you, in a week or less, get dramatic relief from terrible symptoms you thought you had to live with the rest of your life? There’s a fundamental hidden culprit that’s linked to everything from obesity to all the chronic diseases of aging. Addressing this issue that makes us sick and overweight can help create long-term health, vitality, and weight loss.

I’ll give you the key to solving this problem — and unlocking good health. I’m talking about inflammation.

You’re probably familiar with the pain, swelling, redness, and heat that classically signify inflammation. It’s something just about every one out there has experienced. Inflammation is part of the body’s natural defense system. When your body senses foreign invaders, your white blood cells and some special chemicals called cytokines mobilize to protect you. This normal type of inflammation is a good thing. It helps your body protect and heal itself. However, when your immune system shifts out of balance, inflammation can run rampant — causing a chronic, smoldering fire inside your body that contributes to disease and weight gain.

The UltraSimple Diet plan effectively tackles inflammation head on. This one week kick-start brings improved health and rapid weight loss. Poor health and disease is caused by poor food choices — including consuming sugar and bad fats — hidden food allergens, lack of exercise, and chronic stress. These actions trigger raging, unseen inflammation deep in the cells and tissues. Inflammation can lead to the chronic diseases of aging - heart disease, cancer, diabetes, dementia, and more. And of course, weight gain. Being fat is being inflamed — period!

It’s simple. If you don’t address inflammation by eliminating hidden food allergens or sensitivities and by eating an anti-inflammatory diet, you will never succeed at effective and permanent weight loss.

When most people think of food allergies, they usually imagine someone eating a peanut and ending up in the emergency room with a swollen tongue, hives, and not being able to breathe. But there is a different type of reaction to foods that is much less dramatic and deadly — but still very troublesome. It is called a delayed allergy. This reaction is much more common and creates a lot of suffering for millions of people.

This type of delayed allergic reaction can cause symptoms anywhere from a few hours to a few days after ingestion. It also causes a wide range of problems like weight gain, fluid retention, fatigue, brain fog, irritable bowel syndrome, mood problems, headaches, sinus and nasal congestion, joint pains, acne, eczema, and more. If you hear someone say dismissively, “Oh, you just lost water weight,” they’re right (at first), because eating foods you are allergic to causes inflammation, which leads to swelling and fluid retention. Getting rid of this fluid by reducing inflammation is a GOOD thing. It is what will allow your body to start the healing process so you can achieve permanent weight loss and optimal health.

Consuming a low-allergy diet for just one week will help you eliminate the excess swelling and fluid that accumulates in your tissues from food-induced chronic inflammation. Despite criticisms you may have heard about losing ONLY water weight, this is essential for you body to begin to heal and detoxify. And the side effect is that you lose significant weight — quickly and safely.

In my practice, treating food allergies and improving nutrition in general is the single most powerful tool I have to treat, reverse, and even cure hundreds of diseases. These include allergies, arthritis, autoimmune diseases, fatigue, sinus problems, hormonal disorders, obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol, digestive diseases like irritable bowel syndrome, reflux, and colitis, and even mood disorders like depression and anxiety — just to name a few.

You see, we are seeing an epidemic of inflammatory diseases. In fact nearly every modern disease — everything from autoimmune diseases, heart disease, and cancer to obesity, diabetes, and dementia — is caused by inflammation!

While everyone is different, there are some foods that irritate the immune system more than others. They are gluten (wheat, barley, rye, oats, spelt, kamut), dairy (milk, cheese, butter, yogurt), corn, eggs, soy, nuts, nightshades (tomatoes, bell peppers, potatoes, eggplant), citrus, and yeast products.

This program is based on a simple elimination diet, cutting out allergic foods. If you suffer from inflammation and the illness and extra weight that it brings, try The UltraSimple Diet and you should find remarkable relief in the first week from life-long ailments and discover a simple detox diet that causes permanent weight loss as well as healing illness and disease.

If someone owns a polar bear with dental caries, that guy has a big problem: he owns a polar bear! Besides being dangerous, illegal, unethical and unmoral, owning a polar bear has to be very expensive.

Most of us never had, and will never have, to deal with health issues of polar bears. However, zookeepers and veterinarians have to deal with animal health issues everyday, and sometimes with polar bear’s teeth decay.

Health issues of a captive animal directly affect the biological and psychological welfare of that animal. So, quick diagnostic procedures are, or should be, a priority for modern zoos.

But, how to know if the polar bear has dental caries? Or the elephant is shortsighted? Or the penguin has lost weight? Well, some modern zoos are using positive training (reward-based training) as a quick and non-invasive way to assess health issues in captive wild animals.

Through positive training, which is based on principles of operant conditioning, some modern zoos have obtained the cooperation of their animals during diagnosis.

It is quite fascinating to know that polar bears open their mouth to let the vet check their teeth, penguins voluntarily step on a scale so zookeepers can weight them, tigers offer their tales to let the vet get a blood sample, and diabetic chimpanzees voluntarily extend their arms to receive their daily injections.

But it is even more fascinating to know all those amazing things happen because of mutual respect and cooperation between zookeepers and animals that have been trained without any punishment.

While this kind of training is not new, it was not accepted by zoos until a few decades ago. It was Karen Pryor, a biologist and dolphin trainer, one of the few scientists that strongly promoted positive training as an effective way to deal with captive animals.

Practitioners of her training method, known as clicker training, are increasing quickly.

Positive training should be part of enrichment programs of every current zoo and aquarium in the world. Hopefully, it will become a standard part of zoo procedures in the following years.

While training shouldn’t be the only way of environmental/behavioral enrichment, it certainly can play an important role in any enrichment program.

Hopefully, environmental and behavioral enrichment guidelines will find grater acceptance beyond zoos and aquaria. It would be great to find those guidelines while reading books about dogs, cats, hamsters or any other pet. I believe this will happen soon.

Meanwhile, keep yourself away from polar bears with dental caries.

The Orlando schools will be promoting health and wellness to its students this year. As part of the Orange County Schools, the Orlando schools will implement a new wellness policy that was just approved this month.

The new policy is in response to a federal mandate, under the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004. All schools that receive federal funding for school lunch programs must have a wellness policy in place.

The wellness program for the Orlando schools is designed to promote better health to their students. Healthy eating and physical activity will play a big part in the Orlando schools’ policy. The hope is to completely change the Orlando schools’ environments to healthier ones.

With the new wellness program effective on the first day of school, each of the Orlando schools is challenged to be creative and innovative in implementing wellness activities and promotions.

Each of the Orlando schools will create a Healthy School Team (HST). The organization of each team is based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Coordinated School Health Model. There will be a member on each HST to represent each of the following areas of health:

? Health education,
? Counseling.
? Psychological and social services,
? School health services,
? Nutrition services,
? Physical education,
? The healthy school environment,
? Health promotion for Orlando schools’ staff, and
? Family and community.

Under the belief that healthy children is a community-wide concern, each of the Orlando schools will enlist the involvement of parents, families, teachers, counselors, school administrators, healthcare professionals, businesses, and community groups and organizations.

The Orange County schools already have experimented with the wellness program, which will benefit the Orlando schools. For almost three years, the program has been used in 13 schools within the county. The HSTs have been found to be quite effective in promoting health and wellness, not only for the students but their families and school staff, as well. The Orlando schools will use much of the information and experiences from these schools, when implementing their own wellness program this year.

The experimental HSTs have sponsored walking and running clubs for students, school staff, and parents. Another example of creative thinking by the HSTs is “wellness Wednesdays”, whereby students are rewarded for being involved in healthy activities, such as eating nutritious lunches, drinking water versus soda, or participating in a physical activity. Each HST at the Orlando schools will be charged with developing activities that meet the specific needs of each school and its students. The HST members are limited only by their own imaginations to develop creative promotions, events and activities.

The new wellness program at the Orlando schools is all about health and wellness for children, and helping everyone concerned to understand the importance of good health and its effect upon a child’s ability to learn. From the federal mandate to the Orlando schools’ implementation of the wellness program, the sole purpose is to improve the health of students in order for them to be better able to learn and achieve - now and in the future.
